The Dirt on Cleaning!

Everyone loves to cleaning don't they?

OK maybe not but thats what we do at this time of the year. Winter is gone BUT it didn't leave quietly, welcome to the accumulated aftermath of winter, the slush, the muck, the dirt it is everywhere!

The upside of spring cleaning is that it is very rewarding, the results are immediate and highly gratifying, there's none of this dusting the same spot you dust every week even though there is no dust there!

Time to get organized, here are 4 things you can do to exert the least amount of energy and achieve the most effective results.
So get your gloves, bucket and your favorite CD - it's time to get clean!

Windows
- Check seals and weather stripping.
- Thorough cleaning (vinegar & water solution wiped off with newspaper) amazing results!
Tip: Overcast days are best to avoid streaking

Outer Doors
- Wipe down the doorways ridding them of built up dirt, bugs etc this will prevent permanent staining and give your entrances a fresh look.

Walls
- Wipe down walls in heavy traffic areas (light switches, stairs) as well as a general once over. This will remove an outstanding amount of dust build-up you probably never noticed!
Tip: Always test a small area with your cleaning solution to ensure it will not cause any damage to your wall treatment.

Appliances
- Check hoses and cords for wear on all appliances.
- Vacuum coils on your fridge as well as the vent & exhaust areas of your dryer.

Persian Rugs
The maintenance and preservation of your Persian Rug is crucial in keeping (or increasing) not only the aesthetic value but financial as well. There are steps you can take to preserve the original qualities of your rug. This will allow for an extension on your enjoyment of the rug as well as that for generations to come. Here are some guidelines:

Thorough Dusting (to be performed once a year)
Traditionally rugs would be hung up outside and beaten with a paddle type instrument. This method may not be an available option for everyone this is what you can do:
- Flip the rug upside down and secure the fringe underneath between the rug and the floor.
- Use a beater bar and vacuum vigorously the back of the rug (part facing you) this is the only time you use a beater bar on a Persian rug. You will notice, when you lift the rug up this action has caused the dust & dirt to fall onto the floor out of the rug.

Washing (to be performed every 2-3 years)
To maintain the colors, luster, and condition of the wool your rug needs to be washed. Here's how:
- Wash with water & soap. Use only natural soaps that are enzyme and chemical free!
- Professional cleaning is always an option if you are unsure of how to proceed.
Tip: With any rugs that are being stored, refresh the mothballs on a regular basis.
