Traditionally all Persian rugs are considered durable, however it is the tribal rugs that have a most impressive history surrounding their many uses not to mention that they are all-natural from the hand knot process to the vegetable dyes contained within, chemical free and built to take on anything while adding a spiritual dimension to any room.
Shiraz is an ancient city in central Iran which produces a very warm and comfortable series of Persian rugs. It is a major trading center for rugs of nearby villages and towns as well as Persian rugs woven by nomadic tribes such as the Qashqai (pronounced Ghahsh-gha-ee) the most powerful tribe in southern Iran with a reputation for weaving the finest rugs in south Persia.
The nomadic tribes relied heavily on their resources to survive, their lives tied to their sheep and goats; migration was required to escape the extreme changes in weather seasonally. Their ability to translate their environmental inspirations spontaneously into the rugs comes naturally and incurs the likes of: happiness, sadness, hardship and loyalty, to name a few. These rugs are a testament to their resilience and strength and will quite often have geometric motifs, featuring huge diamond-shaped medallions.
A pictorial Shiraz Rug that looks as if the picture is attached to the rug rather than part of it shows a disconnect between story teller and weaver, much like writing a story about something you don't know. More commonly, small animals or plants can be seen blending in harmoniously in parts of the field with the larger more prominently placed figures calling out the importance or affection towards an animal/object which the weaver had a connection or story of some sorts at that moment in their life.
Commonly used colors include brown, rust, and beige, with navy or black outlines
